storycentral DIGITAL: Publishers to sell experiences and not products

Reviewers and Bloggers

In the last episode of Mad Men (series 1) Donald Draper had his ‘eureka’ moment when he thought he had to reinvent the wheel.  Kodak had told him it was a ‘wheel’, when in fact it was the circular cartridge to hold a series of slides for a projector.  Don wasn’t happy with trying to reinvent the wheel – it wasn’t a sexy concept – so he took the cartridge home and used it, finally deciding it was more a carousel than a wheel.  Of course, being Don Draper, he wowed the client, sealed the deal and sold consumers the promise of the ‘experience’ of the carousel.  It was a ride, a journey!  You got on and enjoyed the ride, the memories, “travelling around and around and then back home again”.  Draper sold his ad campaign by tapping into consumers personal experiences and nostalgia rather than boring their asses off by trying to invent the wheel.  The guy’s a legend.  Click the image to view the clip It only runs for a couple of minutes and is perfect for a ‘between-the-cracks’ moment (more on that later..)  Please view it – it’s important!

Examiner.com: Jeff Buick demonstrating leadership in the publishing industry

Reviewers and Bloggers

Leadership is about much more than a boss who gives his employees a great environment to work where they feel developed and valued.  Leadership is a word that defines many forms of ‘taking the lead’.

Leadership is finding new ways to accomplish old tasks and reach goals, leadership is about taking risks.  This is the day and age where the public hears how the publishing industry needs a re-vamp, few people have actually demonstrated how that re-vamp can be accomplished... until now.

Last week was abuzz with articles and information about e-Book sales outpacing traditional books as more and more people are being exposed to recent data.  According to the Association of American Publishers

Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing: This is like, the greatest marketing idea EVER!

Reviewers and Bloggers

I received an email a few days ago from the publishers at enthrill asking me if I would be interested in reviewing  a new book with a very new and innovative marketing design. Enthrill is a brand new publisher, getting set to launch their first book in the next few days. Knowing that they would lose out against the huge publishers if they tried to compete using their traditional marketing methods, they are launching this book as an ongoing project. The idea is so huge, so unique, and so new that I was ready to accept their review offer without even having read the book. Ya, it's that cool! So what is it you ask. Well, let me tell you!

Blooksploring: I'm reading One Child by Jeff Buick

Reviewers and Bloggers

Halima, a small girl in Kandahar, Afghanistan, dreams she changes the world.

U2, the most popular rock band in the world, prepares to take the stage in Moscow.

There is no apparent connection between the two, yet the threads of destiny are pulling them together. And when they collide, people across the globe watch in fascination.

One Child is a reflection of how our world is now, and how it could be. It digs beneath the surface of war-torn Afghanistan through Halima’s eyes. It exposes the cost of greed. It shares the anguish of a young American soldier and the tenacity of a Wall Street MBA who learns that the business world can be an ugly monster.
From the day you meet Halima, to the moment U2 walks onstage, One Child will rock your world.

Thrillers aren't usually my thing. But when I was contacted by Enthrill to see if I was interested in reviewing Jeff Buick's new novel, I said yes because the concept sounds really interesting.

This is more than just a novel...it's kind of an interactive novel. The story in One Child is set over a 30-day period starting on July 27th and ending August 30th. Each day a few chapters are released in an e-reader complete with supporting online media. See the press release for a better explanation of this. For example, I'm two days into it and so far when characters are mentioned you can click on their name to see links to their Facebook profile, Linked in profile (for the businessmen), Twitter (updated daily), etc. There's also a daily news webpage where you can hear news bulletins that enhance what's happening in the story and a webpage for the company, Platinus Investments.
If you're interested in checking out One Child, the first eight days are free. Simply register here. There's also a Facebook page where you can discuss the chapters.
I'll be posting my thoughts about the novel and the online experience once the story ends on August 25th.

Knit Two Together: One Child: an online reading experience

Reviewers and Bloggers

...

I hope at least some of you have taken the time to check out the online book experience I talked about last time. I have been raving about One Child to any and all that will stand still enough to listen, but that's not really enough anymore; a little book review is in order.

One Child is a thriller which ultimately brings together several story lines in a grand climax. The first 8 (erm 9, more on that later) days are free to anyone with the remainder of the book available in daily release online format for only $10. I think it's a bargain.
